🗣 Vowels vs. Consonants

A quick phonetic refresher on how the English alphabet is structured.

The modern English alphabet consists of 26 letters. These letters are categorized by linguists and educators into two primary types based on how they are pronounced: Vowels and Consonants.

What is a Vowel?

A vowel is an open vocal sound. When you speak a vowel, your breath flows freely through your mouth without being blocked by your tongue, teeth, or lips.

The standard vowels are: A, E, I, O, U.

Note: The letter "Y" is sometimes considered a vowel (like in the word "gym" or "sky"), but our tool categorizes "Y" strictly as a consonant to comply with standard computational phonetic rules.

What is a Consonant?

A consonant is an articulated sound. When you pronounce a consonant, the air flow from your lungs is partially or completely blocked by your lips, teeth, or tongue. Try saying the letter "B" or "M" — notice how your lips must touch to make the sound?

There are 21 standard consonants: B, C, D, F, G, H, J, K, L, M, N, P, Q, R, S, T, V, W, X, Y, Z.
